About The Band Research

An independent, free handbook for independent and amateur bands.

Why this site exists

Running a band involves a surprising number of jobs nobody signs up for: sound engineer, booker, accountant, designer, label manager and diplomat. Good information on these jobs is often scattered, out of date or written to sell something. The Band Research collects the essentials into a small set of practical guides that a band can read in an evening and use the next day.

Editorial approach

  • Practical first. Every guide aims to leave you with something to do: a checklist, a set of steps or a timeline.
  • General, not specific. We describe types of tools and services (digital distributors, streaming services, performing rights organisations) rather than recommending particular companies, and we avoid quoting prices that change over time.
  • No endorsements or paid placements. Nobody pays to appear in these guides, and we don't present any band, musician or business as endorsing the site.
  • Nothing invented. We don't publish made-up statistics, quotes, interviews or testimonials.
  • Corrections welcome. If something is unclear or wrong, tell us and we'll review it.

The guides are general information. They're not legal, financial or tax advice; see the terms for details.
